Members of Parliament, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, have paid a condolence visit to the family of the late former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
Afenyo-Markin shared that the parliamentary delegation visited the residence of the late First Lady to express their sympathy to the bereaved family and support their colleague, Hon. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey.
“Together with my colleague Members of Parliament, we visited the residence of the late former First Lady to commiserate with her family and our colleague, Hon. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings,” he said.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra after a short illness. She was 76 years old.
Born on November 17, 1948, in Cape Coast, Nana Konadu was educated at Achimota School and later pursued Art and Textiles at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
She married former President Jerry John Rawlings in 1977 and served as First Lady of Ghana during several political eras — under the AFRC from June to September 1979, the PNDC from 1981 to 1993, and the Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2001.
Throughout her public life, she was a strong advocate for women’s rights and empowerment. She founded the 31st December Women’s Movement, a nationwide organization dedicated to improving the welfare of women and children. Nana Konadu later established the National Democratic Party (NDP), continuing her political and social activism.
Her death marks the end of an era for one of Ghana’s most influential women — a leader remembered for her courage, advocacy, and commitment to national development.
