Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has named his nephew and global Afrobeats star, David Adeleke (Davido), as the Chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, in a fresh move aimed at revamping the state's sports sector.
The announcement was made during a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, by the Osun chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).
New Vision for Osun Sports
According to Adewusi, Davido’s appointment is part of the state government’s plan to develop a sustainable sports system powered by both public and private sector partnerships. The newly introduced Sports Trust Fund is expected to attract investments from sports philanthropists locally and internationally.
He also revealed that plans are underway to establish the Osun State Sports Commission, which will oversee sports development, policy implementation, and administration across the state.
Davido’s Influence Seen as Game-Changer
The Deputy Governor confirmed that Davido accepted the role without hesitation, expressing his willingness to contribute to grassroots and elite sports development in Osun. The state is banking on the music icon’s global fame and network to bring visibility, funding, and long-term support to its sports programs.
Adewusi added that the government remains committed to completing the renovation of the Osogbo Township Stadium, which is being upgraded to meet Olympic standards and host both national and international competitions.
“The project will be delivered in the shortest time possible. We want a world-class facility right here in Osun,” he assured.
Public Divided Over Family Appointments
While many praised Davido’s appointment as a bold and innovative move, some Nigerians—especially Osun residents—expressed concerns over Governor Adeleke’s continued placement of family members in key positions.
In 2023, the governor appointed another nephew, Tunji Adeleke (son of late former Governor Isiaka Adeleke), as Chairman of the Osun Local Government Board, a move that also sparked debate.
