The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a man identified as Innocent Chukwuma in Oyigbo, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for allegedly using social media to call on the Nigerian military to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
According to reports, Chukwuma, who operates under the X (formerly Twitter) handle @TheAgroman, posted a series of messages urging the armed forces to stage a coup and take control of the government.
What He Posted Online
In one of his posts, Chukwuma wrote:
“A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian government, and join the AES. That is all we need now.”
“It will happen eventually. Nigerians, the military needs your support now! Only them can save this country.”
“The bastard in Aso Rock has basically sold this country to the West, and they run our intelligence apparatus. Only the military can reset this country. Support them.”
The inflammatory posts quickly caught the attention of security agencies, leading to a prompt investigation.
How the Arrest Happened
Security sources revealed that the DSS traced the social media activity to Chukwuma’s location in Oyigbo. Following verification that the X account was active and linked to him, operatives moved in and arrested the suspect.
Electronic devices and other digital evidence allegedly connected to the posts were confiscated during the operation.
Ongoing Investigation
A DSS source confirmed that Chukwuma is cooperating with investigators, who are now examining his online communications and possible links to other individuals or groups who may have shared or promoted the content.
Officials stated that the arrest was part of broader efforts to deter incitement to unconstitutional actions and maintain public order.
Legal and Security Implications
Calls for a military takeover or suspension of the constitution are criminal under Nigerian law. Authorities consider such acts a direct threat to national security and democratic stability.
Legal analysts noted that if found guilty, Chukwuma could face charges related to treasonable felony or incitement, both carrying severe penalties.
Security experts also warned that unchecked online rhetoric of this nature could escalate into real-world violence or instability.
Public Reaction
The arrest has generated mixed reactions on social media. While many Nigerians condemned the posts and supported the DSS’s swift action, others raised concerns about freedom of expression and the fine line between dissent and sedition.
The DSS is expected to conclude its investigation before deciding whether to charge the suspect in court.
