Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has appealed to party delegates to re-elect him as the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking to delegates in the Sefwi Akontombra Constituency in the Western North Region on Tuesday, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that persistence and loyalty have historically been rewarded within the NPP’s political journey.
He explained that since Ghana’s return to constitutional democracy in 1992, first-time presidential candidates have often struggled to win elections.
“One important thing in the NPP’s political history is that electorates tend to favour repeat candidates,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “If you look at the NPP’s history, it is difficult for a candidate to make a one-time claim to the presidency.”
Citing examples from the party’s past, he recalled that Professor Albert Adu-Boahen, the NPP’s first presidential candidate in 1992, lost his bid for the presidency. However, subsequent candidates who demonstrated persistence went on to achieve victory.
“Former President Kufuor won the presidency in 2000 after losing in 1996. Similarly, President Akufo-Addo succeeded after three attempts,” he noted.
Dr. Bawumia therefore urged delegates to support him in the same spirit, assuring them of his commitment to leading the party to victory in 2028.
“I am asking for another opportunity to lead our great party — just as you did for Kufuor and Akufo-Addo — so that together, we can secure power again in 2028,” he appealed.
