The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has appointed Ms. Joycelyn Quashie, Member of Parliament for North Dayi, to the Bureau of the Forum of Young Parliamentarians, a key arm of the global parliamentary organization.
Ms. Quashie, who also chairs the Ghana Chapter of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, will represent the African Group on the Bureau, which focuses on promoting youth inclusion and leadership within parliaments worldwide.
In a statement to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the IPU confirmed:
“Ms. Joycelyn Quashie was put forward and elected by the Forum to take up the vacant position.”
According to Mr. Jonathan Lang, a Project Officer at the IPU, Ghana’s delegation had initially nominated Madam Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, MP for Ada, to serve on the Bureau. However, her nomination was later withdrawn due to age eligibility restrictions outlined in the Forum’s rules.
Speaking to GNA, Ms. Quashie revealed that she was not part of the Ghanaian delegation attending the 151st IPU Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, where the decision was finalized.
“I was contacted by Ms. Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, who explained that her age made her ineligible for the position. She asked me to forward my details for consideration, which I did,” Ms. Quashie said.
She described her appointment as “good news,” acknowledging Ms. Cudjoe’s role in facilitating the process and highlighting her advocacy for greater participation of young women in politics.
The Forum of Young Parliamentarians was established by the IPU in 2013 to enhance youth inclusion in parliaments and strengthen intergenerational representation in democratic governance. The initiative responds to the global concern that fewer than three percent of the world’s MPs are under 30 years old, even though young people constitute more than half of the global population.
The Forum’s objectives include increasing youth representation in national legislatures, promoting youth-friendly political systems, and empowering young lawmakers to take active roles in governance and policy-making.
Several Ghanaian MPs have previously participated in the IPU’s youth-focused programs, including Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Francis-Xavier Sosu, and John Ntim Fordjour.
Ms. Quashie’s appointment is expected to further strengthen Ghana’s contribution to international youth representation and enhance the country’s voice in global parliamentary affairs.
