Tension has gripped the Awutu Kwashie Abbey community in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region after four military officers and two national security operatives were arrested by the Bawjiase District Police Command for allegedly attempting to install a rival chief.
According to police sources, the arrests were made following intelligence reports that a group of individuals was secretly preparing to enstool a new chief, despite the presence of the officially recognized and gazetted traditional ruler, Nai Kwashie Abbey VII.
The police intervention triggered chaos, as supporters of the incumbent chief besieged the Bawjiase Police Station, demanding the immediate release of the detained officers. The agitated crowd threatened to resort to violence if their demands were not met.
The standoff escalated until a military vehicle, registered 52 GA 62, arrived at the scene with reinforcement to secure the release of the arrested soldiers.
Members of the Asafo group loyal to Nai Kwashie Abbey VII strongly condemned the attempted installation, accusing the military and national security personnel of meddling in local chieftaincy affairs.
Asafo Supi Nipa-Nka, leader of the group, cautioned state security agencies to refrain from interfering in traditional matters, warning that such actions could inflame tensions and destabilize the community.
“The military and national security must stay away from chieftaincy issues. Their involvement will only worsen tensions and disturb the peace in our area,” he warned.
Calm has since been restored, but residents report that the atmosphere remains uneasy as they await further action from both the police and traditional authorities.
