A special taskforce from the National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association of Ghana has destroyed more than 120 pieces of equipment used in illegal mining (galamsey) operations across parts of the Ashanti Region.
The two-week operation is aimed at supporting the government’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal mining, particularly activities polluting key water bodies.
The taskforce first targeted illegal mining sites in the Ahafo Ano South West District, where rivers such as the Mankran and Offin have been severely contaminated. It then moved into Amadaa and Kotokuom in the Atwima Mponua District.
Miners fled upon the taskforce’s arrival, abandoning excavators, chanfan platforms, engines, and other mining gear, all of which were destroyed on-site.
Speaking to the media in Kumasi, Association President Michael Kwadwo Peprah reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the country’s water bodies and farmlands.
“We are working in line with government to end galamsey. At the same time, we’re educating mining communities on the need to protect the environment,” Peprah stated.
The Association says the exercise will continue in other illegal mining hotspots in the region.
