Government Announces 120% NHIS Tariff Increase for 2026

The government has confirmed a significant increase in tariffs under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), with a 120% average rise in payments to healthcare providers set to take effect in 2026.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh disclosed the adjustment during the Government Accountability Series on December 1, calling it one of the largest funding boosts in the history of the NHIS.

This tariff increase follows years of complaints from hospitals and clinics about the inadequacy of NHIS reimbursement rates, which many considered too low to support quality healthcare delivery.

“Starting next year, we will be raising the tariffs paid to service providers, as the current rates have been deemed unrealistic,” said Minister Akandoh. He added that the 120% increase is expected to be a “game-changer” in improving the sustainability of healthcare services under the NHIS.

The government anticipates that this move will stabilize healthcare delivery by enabling facilities to maintain equipment, purchase essential medicines, and continue providing quality care without relying on co-payments or turning away NHIS beneficiaries.

“The goal of this adjustment is to strengthen the system, boost provider confidence, and ultimately enhance the services available to NHIS subscribers,” Akandoh explained.

Further details on the specific tariff increases for different procedures and disease categories will be provided before the end of the fiscal year.
