Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has provided a positive update on midfielder Jorginho, stating the Italian is "recovering well" from a lung injury and could return before the end of the season.
Jorginho, 33, last featured for the Gunners on 12 April, when he was substituted in the closing minutes of the 1-1 draw against Brentford with a suspected chest injury. Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Bournemouth on Saturday (17:30 BST), Arteta confirmed the situation had been more complex than initially anticipated.
"It got a bit more complicated than expected. He’s fine, he’s recovering well," Arteta said.
Although Arsenal have not officially disclosed the specifics of the injury, sources suggest Jorginho suffered a punctured lung. When asked about the possibility of his vice-captain returning this season, Arteta responded: "I think so, if everything goes OK in the next week or so."
Jorginho is approaching the end of his contract at Arsenal and is expected to depart the Emirates Stadium this summer. Since arriving from Chelsea in a £12 million deal in January 2023, he has made 78 appearances for the club.
Arteta also shared encouraging news about Kai Havertz, who is recovering from hamstring surgery following a severe muscle tear sustained during Arsenal’s winter training camp in Dubai in February. Initially ruled out for the remainder of the season, the German international is now progressing well and could return before the campaign concludes.
Arsenal will face Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday, trailing 1-0 from the first leg. The potential return of Havertz could provide a timely boost should the Gunners reach the final.
