NPP Condemns President Mahama’s Actions as Threat to Judicial Independence

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly criticized President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of undermining Ghana’s judicial system in a deliberate attempt to politicize and destabilize the country’s democratic institutions.

At a press briefing ahead of the party’s planned "Save the Judiciary" protest, NPP National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, accused the President of violating constitutional provisions and involving the judiciary in partisan politics.

Boakye described the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo as unconstitutional and deeply concerning. He argued that the President’s decision contravenes Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution and called for its immediate reversal, labeling the move as both “procedurally flawed” and “ultra vires.”

“This orchestrated assault on the judiciary threatens to dismantle the very institutional safeguards that preserve our democracy,” Boakye said, warning that Ghana is witnessing a “diabolical agenda” aimed at taking over the judicial branch.

He further questioned the neutrality of Justice Gabriel Pwamang, who is chairing the committee investigating the Chief Justice, citing concerns of bias due to his previous rulings related to the matter.
