TEWU-GH at KNUST Set to Suspend Strike Following Productive Talks with GTEC

Members of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU-GH) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are expected to suspend their ongoing strike by Monday, following a meeting with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

The strike, which was initiated due to concerns over what the union described as inadequate representation on KNUST’s Governing Council, may soon come to an end as GTEC has pledged to address the union’s concerns within two weeks.

TEWU-GH leadership expressed optimism after engaging with officials from the Commission. National Chairman Abdul Sulemana urged members to exercise patience while discussions continue.

“We are using this opportunity to plead with our members to have patience so that the issues can be dealt with, and we believe that in about two weeks, these issues will be put to rest,” Mr. Sulemana stated.

Local Chairman at KNUST, Charles Arthur, also confirmed the union's intention to suspend the strike after concluding consultations with its members. He referenced provisions in Ghana’s Labour Act, which recommend a cooling-off period during active negotiations.

Dr. Abdulai Jinapor, Director-General of GTEC, emphasized the Commission’s neutral stance, noting its commitment to a fair and inclusive resolution. He also clarified that legitimate representation on the Council must originate from within the union itself.

The expected suspension of the strike is anticipated to restore normal operations at KNUST, while stakeholders work towards a lasting resolution of the issues raised by TEWU-GH.
