Nigerian music sensation Ayra Starr has etched her name in history as the 2025 BET Awards crowned her Best International Act, marking her first-ever win at the prestigious event. The ceremony took place at the Peacock Arena in Los Angeles.
Ayra triumphed in a competitive category, beating out fellow nominees including Nigerian superstar Rema and South African hitmaker Tyla. Her international hit single “Rush” and growing global recognition played a major role in securing the award after previous nominations in the same category.
Although Starr came up short in two other categories—Best New Artist, which went to Leon Thomas, and Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, awarded to SZA—her landmark win signals a significant milestone for her career and for African music’s global presence.
The evening also saw fellow Nigerian artist Tems receive two nominations in the BET Her category, but the award ultimately went to Summer Walker for her emotive song “Heart of a Woman.”
Kendrick Lamar emerged as the night's biggest winner, taking home five awards from ten nominations. His wins included:
