Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after meeting his bail conditions. He had previously failed to fulfill the GHS 50 million bail bond, which required two sureties.
NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, confirmed Wontumi’s release and thanked Dr. Bryan Acheampong for playing a key role in securing the bail. Kodua criticized the alleged misuse of state security agencies to intimidate political opponents and cautioned those in authority that power is temporary. He also urged party members to remain calm and called on the government to allow the courts to handle such matters, rather than relying on EOCO or similar agencies.
Wontumi is currently under investigation for several serious allegations, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. The Deputy Attorney General revealed that these investigations are part of a broader effort involving asset recovery, aimed at preventing the loss of suspected criminal proceeds.
In addition, Wontumi is reportedly linked to a second, more expansive probe concerning international organized crime. EOCO is said to be cooperating with global law enforcement bodies in this investigation.
As legal proceedings unfold, the case is expected to continue through the formal judicial process.
