Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak, has underscored the critical role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in advancing Ghana’s national development. He emphasized that meaningful investment in TVET is essential if the country is to meet its developmental objectives.
In a statement shared on social media, Dr. Apaak called for an end to the long-standing stigmatization of TVET pathways. “We cannot achieve our developmental aspirations without investing in and mainstreaming TVET. The days when students who pursued TVET were stigmatized and unfairly labeled as less intelligent are over. John Dramani Mahama will prioritize and mainstream TVET education,” he stated.
Dr. Apaak’s remarks align with recent statements by former President John Dramani Mahama, who has called for a comprehensive overhaul of TVET in Ghana. Speaking at the presentation of the Final Report of the National Education Forum, Mahama outlined an ambitious plan to reposition TVET as a cornerstone of the country’s educational and economic framework.
"We must elevate and transform Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). For too long, it has been treated as a secondary option. That must change," Mahama asserted. "We will establish modern, well-resourced TVET institutions in every region, aligned with key sectors such as agro-processing, green energy, manufacturing, construction, and digital services. Partnerships with industry will be critical to ensure training leads directly to employment or entrepreneurship."
The renewed emphasis on TVET is widely regarded as a strategic initiative aimed at fostering economic diversification, job creation, and inclusive development. It reflects a broader national agenda to equip young Ghanaians with practical, in-demand skills that support both domestic industry needs and global economic competitiveness.
