President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to ban the importation and production of styrofoam food containers in Ghana, citing their harmful impact on the environment. The move, he said, will form part of a broader strategy by his future administration to address sanitation and pollution.
Speaking during his ongoing Thank You Tour, Mahama emphasized the environmental threat posed by the widespread use of styrofoam, particularly in the food service industry.
“You finish eating and just dump it—that’s one of the biggest polluters,” he stated.
He explained that the proposed ban would be implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, with the promotion of sustainable alternatives such as paper-based packaging and aluminium foil.
While the message was serious, Mahama added a moment of levity that drew laughter from the audience. As he began his speech with the phrase, “Fellow Ghanaians, the journey from landfill…”, he paused, smirked, and remarked:
“Oh, fellow Ghanaians—that sounds very familiar, yeah?”
This lighthearted comment was a clear nod to former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s widely recognized COVID-19 broadcasts, which often began with the phrase. Mahama then corrected himself with a grin, saying, “Okay, fellow citizens.”
The moment blended humor with purpose, reinforcing Mahama’s commitment to environmental reform while playfully poking fun at his predecessor.
As Ghana continues to grapple with waste management challenges, the proposed ban on styrofoam could mark a significant shift toward greener practices—if implemented under a future Mahama-led administration.
