The family of former Ghanaian Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has strongly criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), accusing the agency of conducting a politically motivated campaign against him.
In a statement released on Monday, June 9, the family described the INTERPOL Red Notice issued against Mr. Ofori-Atta as part of a "premeditated vendetta" and a misuse of prosecutorial authority. They demanded the immediate withdrawal of the notice, citing violations of due process, international legal standards, and human rights.
According to the family, the February arrest warrant—issued in connection with allegations of abuse of office for personal gain—was obtained without a supporting affidavit or formal charges. They further allege that the OSP withheld critical medical information and manipulated evidence.
The family clarified that Mr. Ofori-Atta is not evading justice but is currently undergoing treatment for cancer at the Mayo Clinic in the United States. He is scheduled to undergo surgery on June 13.
They added that due to his health condition, Mr. Ofori-Atta requested to be interviewed via video link—a request permitted by law. However, the OSP rejected the proposal, labeling him a fugitive and publicizing the matter before any judicial determination had been made.
A final ruling on the legality of the OSP's actions is expected from Ghana’s Human Rights Court on June 18.
