The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) has condemned the killing of Mohammed Zia-ulhak Zibrim, a prominent pharmacist and Chief Executive Officer of Zimax Pharmacy, describing the act as a national tragedy and a brutal attack on Ghana’s healthcare community.
Zibrim was fatally shot on the night of Thursday, June 5, 2025, outside his home in Bolgatanga shortly after returning from work. In addition to being a respected pharmacist, he served as the General Secretary of PSGH’s Upper East Regional Branch and was known for his commitment to public health and peacebuilding in the ethnically divided Bawku area.
Born of both Mamprusi and Kusasi descent, Zibrim was celebrated for his ability to bridge deep-rooted ethnic divides in the region. His murder has raised fears that he may have been targeted due to his unique background and peacebuilding efforts.
In a strongly worded statement, PSGH President Dr. Samuel Kow Donkoh described the killing as a “heinous and barbaric act,” emphasizing the devastating impact on both the pharmacy profession and the broader healthcare system.
“This is not merely a personal loss—it is a national tragedy,” Dr. Donkoh stated. “Zibrim was one of our most passionate and dedicated members. His death is a wound to our profession and a setback to efforts aimed at strengthening healthcare in underserved communities.”
The PSGH expressed concern that the incident may be linked to the protracted ethnic conflict in the Upper East Region and called on the Ghana Police Service and national security agencies to act swiftly in bringing those responsible to justice.
“It is profoundly tragic that someone who rose above division and worked for the common good may have fallen victim to the very tensions he sought to heal,” the Society noted.
The organization also urged the government to increase security measures for healthcare professionals working in volatile and high-risk regions.
“The safety of pharmacists and healthcare workers must be treated as a national priority,” the statement emphasized. “We call for enhanced protection and proactive measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
The PSGH extended its deepest condolences to Zibrim’s family—his elderly parents, wife, and four children—and pledged continuous support in their time of grief.
“We stand in solidarity with his family and colleagues,” the statement concluded. “May his legacy of peace, professionalism, and service continue to inspire us all.”
