Amid an ongoing investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has made it clear that he harbors no intention of retaliating against political opponents, despite what he describes as past persecution.
Former Member of Parliament for New Edubease, Hon. George Oduro, revealed in an interview on Movement TV that Wontumi had confided in him about his decision not to seek revenge against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) should political power shift again.
“Chairman Wontumi told me that he is not planning to retaliate against the NDC when the NPP returns to power,” Oduro said. He described the regional chairman as a man with a forgiving heart, even when wronged by people within his own political party. “There were individuals within the NPP whom he supported but who later turned their backs on him during internal elections. He still didn’t hold any grudges,” he added.
This disclosure comes in the wake of Chairman Wontumi’s arrest by EOCO on May 27, 2025. He was subsequently granted bail to the tune of GH₵50 million, with two sureties to be justified. The arrest has caused considerable stir within political circles, with many NPP supporters alleging that the move is politically motivated and designed to tarnish his image.
Wontumi is reportedly under investigation for alleged involvement in illegal mining activities and related financial misconduct. However, his supporters maintain that the charges are part of a broader strategy to silence his influential voice in the Ashanti Region, a stronghold of the NPP.
Despite the intense scrutiny and political tension, Wontumi has reportedly remained calm and focused. Behind the scenes, he has called for peace and reconciliation, urging his followers to avoid vendettas and to focus on unity.
His posture of forgiveness and restraint is being hailed by some as a refreshing departure from the cycle of political retribution that often characterizes Ghanaian politics.
