The Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has called on the youth to take a strong stand against corruption and societal division, emphasizing that the future of the nation rests in their hands.
Speaking at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), during the second phase of the launch of the Young Commons Forum (YCF), Mr. Afenyo-Markin reminded students of the importance of integrity and accountability in every area of life.
"I urge you to reject corruption and resist division whenever you encounter them. Choosing unity over division strengthens the very fabric that holds our nation together," he stated.
He added that speaking out against nepotism and injustice signals a generational shift—one that refuses to accept the practices that have historically hindered Ghana’s progress.
Role of Young Leaders
Addressing leadership at all levels, Mr. Afenyo-Markin encouraged young people to practice transparency and responsibility in their daily roles:
- “If you’re a student leader, be transparent with your colleagues.”
- “If you’re a volunteer, honour your commitments.”
- “If you run a business, serve your customers with honesty.”
He stressed that real empowerment goes beyond academic achievement and must be supported by tangible opportunities and investments.
“Youth empowerment cannot stop at the lecture hall. It must be backed by deliberate actions that open doors and remove barriers,” he noted.
This, he explained, includes investment in research and development, access to capital for young entrepreneurs, and an environment that fosters innovation.
On Political Conduct
Touching on Ghana’s political culture, Mr. Afenyo-Markin criticized the "tit-for-tat" approach often witnessed in politics.
“Sometimes we think bringing down our opponents will make us more popular. It doesn’t. It only pushes the country backward.”
A Word of Caution
He also cautioned against the misuse of support provided for youth development, particularly entrepreneurial programs.
“Don’t abuse the support given to you. When you do, you rob the next generation of the same opportunity.”
