Nigerian man has taken to social media to share a painful personal story, alleging that a current commissioner in Osun State was responsible for defrauding his father in the 1990s—a betrayal that plunged his once-thriving family into poverty.
In a detailed thread posted on X (formerly Twitter), user @Row_Haastrup recounted how his father, a respected employee at a German computer company, decided to resign in 1995 to venture into private business. Armed with a severance package of ₦350,000, his father sought to build something of his own after learning the intricacies of corporate partnerships and market strategies during his time at the company.
However, the promising future took a dark turn after his father met a man—now a commissioner in Osun State—who claimed he could import goods from abroad. Trusting him, the father invested his entire settlement into the deal.
“My dad worked with a German company that dealt in computers. Life was good. He was respected and believed he could replicate that success in his own business,” @Row_Haastrup wrote.
He explained that the alleged fraudster was also from Osun State and presented himself as someone with the capability to handle international sourcing—a part of the business the father wasn’t familiar with. After receiving the money, the man reportedly vanished.
“One week turned into two, then a month. We started panicking. Eventually, my dad knew he had been duped.”
Despite involving the police, the Force Headquarters, and even Interpol—thanks to the family’s connection through a grand-uncle who was then a Commissioner of Police in Ondo State—nothing came of the investigation. It was later discovered that the man had fled to Côte d’Ivoire, where he disappeared.
A Life Changed Overnight
The impact on the family was devastating. With the father’s entire savings gone and no source of income, the family fell into deep poverty. His mother, a teacher with the Lagos State Government, earned just ₦1,000 per month at the time—barely enough to survive.
“Don’t let me describe the kind of poverty we faced. It’s not what I’d wish on my worst enemy,” he added.
“That man stole the future we could have had. He made sure we experienced shame, ridicule, and reproach.”
Today, that same man allegedly holds a commissioner position in Osun State. The revelation came as a shock to the narrator when his father mentioned it last year.
“When my dad told me, I almost went mad. But he had forgiven him. My dad is now a Deeper Life pastor and believes in peace and forgiveness.”
Although @Row_Haastrup chose not to disclose the commissioner’s name out of respect for his father’s forgiveness and peace of mind, he expressed his lasting grief over the hardships his family endured due to the betrayal.
“The only reason I’m not mentioning his name is because my dad met him and forgave him. He is at peace now and proud that he was still able to raise his sons well.”
He concluded the thread with a reflection on resilience and faith:
“You never know what life will throw at you, but our prayer is that the number of our victories will match the number of our battles—if not exceed them.”
