Dr. Afriyie, a senior lecturer at Kumasi Technical University, has made serious allegations against the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing the party of facilitating the entry of foreign nationals into Ghana to engage in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Speaking during an interview on Wontumi TV, Dr. Afriyie asserted that the NDC's approach to illegal mining is driven more by political motives than national interest.
“If the NDC truly regarded illegal mining as a national security threat, they would have declared a state of emergency during their time in office,” he said.
He further claimed that some party leaders are leveraging galamsey operations as a means to recover funds allegedly lost over the past eight years, showing little regard for the long-term environmental and economic damage caused by such activities.
“NDC leaders are using galamsey as a tool to regain financial resources lost during their previous tenure. Former President Mahama seems more concerned about the current economic state than the environmental legacy we leave for future generations,” Dr. Afriyie added.
He also expressed skepticism that the NDC would ever fully enforce a ban on illegal mining, suggesting that political considerations—especially in mining-heavy constituencies—make such action unlikely.
The comments have sparked debate, as illegal mining continues to be a contentious issue in Ghana due to its devastating environmental impact and its links to organized crime and political patronage.
