A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread debate online after advising the public to stop using sponges while bathing, claiming they do more harm than good.
In a now-viral video circulating on social media, the woman passionately discouraged the use of any kind of sponge for personal hygiene. Holding up a sponge as a visual aid, she emphasized that her warning may have come late, but she still felt compelled to share her concerns for the benefit of others.
"Don’t use sponge to bathe," she said in a mix of English and Pidgin. "I know it might be too late for me to advise you, but I still want to caution you. I know some of you are my seniors."
She explained that scrubbing the skin with a sponge can cause microtears—tiny abrasions that may not be visible to the naked eye. According to her, these small cuts can serve as entry points for harmful microorganisms, potentially leading to skin infections.
The woman went on to argue that the skin naturally produces oils that serve as a protective barrier. When sponges are used, she said, this natural oil is stripped away, leaving the skin dry, itchy, and more susceptible to irritation.
“Unless your daily activities involve intense labor or exposure to dirt, such as in construction or farming,” she added, “there is no need to use a sponge while bathing. Office workers and those with relatively clean jobs should avoid it entirely.”
Her remarks have stirred conversation online, with some users supporting her views on natural skincare, while others remain skeptical of abandoning such a common hygiene tool.
