Cecilia Johnson, a distinguished member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a lifelong advocate for women’s empowerment in Ghana, has passed away at the age of 79.
Her family confirmed her death on Monday, September 22, 2025, although the cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
Johnson was a prominent figure in Ghana’s democratic evolution, gaining national recognition in the 1980s and 1990s as the General Secretary of the 31st December Women’s Movement. The organization played a significant role in championing the rights of women across the country during a transformative period in Ghana’s political landscape.
Her dedication to public service led to her appointment as Minister for Local Government under former President Jerry John Rawlings, where she continued her advocacy for grassroots development and women's participation in governance.
Born in Awua-Domase in the former Brong-Ahafo Region (now Bono Region), Cecilia Johnson was one of twelve children of Joana Bennett, a revered community leader in her own right.
Johnson's legacy is marked by her unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and the empowerment of women in both political and social spheres.
