Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called for restraint and unity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the party prepares for its upcoming flagbearer race. Speaking at the inauguration of a new NPP constituency office in Bantama on Friday, September 19, Kufuor urged party members contesting leadership positions to exercise caution and avoid the use of inflammatory language that could damage the party's unity.
Kufuor acknowledged the natural competition within any political party but emphasized that it should be conducted with respect. "Siblings often fight for power, but it is unacceptable for one person to gain power by completely sidelining others. This approach will only weaken the party," he cautioned.
His comments come in response to increasing tensions and personal attacks between aspirants and their supporters. The former president warned that such behavior threatens to undermine the party’s internal cohesion and electoral strength. He further stated, "We must avoid insults and disparagement. The language used in this race has been painful and hurtful, whether by the candidates themselves or their supporters. It's possible that the candidates are unaware of the tone being set by those around them."
Kufuor reiterated that healthy internal competition is vital for democracy but must be guided by mutual respect and a collective commitment to the party's overarching goals.
