Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has officially conceded defeat in the country’s recent general election, acknowledging the victory of opposition candidate and former president Peter Mutharika.
In a televised address to the nation on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, President Chakwera admitted that the election results were no longer in his favor, describing Mutharika’s lead as “insurmountable.”
“A few minutes ago, I called Professor Mutharika to wish him well,” Chakwera stated. “It is clear that my rival has secured an insurmountable lead.”
His concession came just hours before the Malawi Electoral Commission was expected to officially announce the final results of the September 16 general elections.
Peaceful Transition Promised
Chakwera, 70, who rose to power in 2020 under the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) after defeating Mutharika in a court-sanctioned re-run, assured Malawians of a smooth and peaceful transfer of power.
“In the days that remain, I want you to know that I am committed to a peaceful handover,” he affirmed, adding that he understood the disappointment many of his supporters may feel.
Economic Woes Drive Voter Discontent
The election was largely influenced by widespread dissatisfaction over Malawi’s economic situation.
Throughout his tenure, Chakwera faced mounting criticism over his leadership, with detractors citing:
- Indecisive governance
- Failure to fulfill job creation promises
- Lack of progress in fighting corruption
Under his administration, inflation surged to 33%, making daily life difficult for many Malawians. The cost of staple commodities, including maize and fertilizer, rose sharply—deepening the frustration of the country’s predominantly rural population.
A Graceful Exit
Chakwera’s decision to concede ahead of the official results has drawn praise for reinforcing democratic principles in Africa, where peaceful transitions of power are not always guaranteed.
With the election outcome now clear, the spotlight turns to Peter Mutharika, who will return to the presidency after five years in opposition. As Malawi prepares for its next chapter, many hope for a renewed focus on economic recovery and accountability.
