The Minister for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced that the government will intervene to help resolve the ongoing chieftaincy dispute between the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II.

This announcement marks the first official statement from the government concerning the long-standing feud between the two traditional leaders, which has gained national attention due to its historical and cultural implications.

Speaking in an interview with Peace FM, Minister Ibrahim disclosed that preliminary engagements with key stakeholders have already begun. He emphasized his intention to continue dialogue with both parties and other relevant actors in order to mediate and de-escalate the tension.

According to the minister, the government recognizes the importance of traditional leadership in national development. He cited Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s successful role in mediating the Dagbon conflict as an example of how chieftaincy institutions can play a pivotal role in maintaining peace and unity.

“In Ghana, we can use our chieftaincy system to support national development. When we had the Dagbon crisis, wasn't it Otumfuo who helped resolve it?” Ibrahim stated, reaffirming his respect for both the Asantehene and the Dormaahene.

The Dormaahene, who also serves as the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, has previously made statements regarding historical narratives he believes have been distorted, particularly about the status of Dormaa in relation to Asanteman.

The government’s involvement is expected to pave the way for a peaceful resolution, preserving the dignity of both traditional authorities and reinforcing national cohesion.
