Vice President of Ghana, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, commemorated this year’s Founders’ Day with a visit to Rev. Christian Tsui Hesse, popularly known as Rev. Chris Hesse, the personal photographer of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
In a Facebook post observed by MyNewsGh, the Vice President hailed Rev. Hesse as “one of Ghana’s most celebrated cinematographers and filmmakers,” acknowledging his critical role in preserving the visual history of Ghana’s political journey and national development.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was accompanied by senior members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including Mr. Goosie Tanoh and Mr. Alex Segbefia.
“I expressed my deep appreciation for Rev. Hesse’s lifelong commitment to documenting and safeguarding Ghana’s historical legacy. His extensive archives are an invaluable national treasure, especially in an era where historical narratives are frequently distorted,” the Vice President wrote.
She further assured the veteran photographer of the government’s dedication to preserving his body of work and ensuring its accessibility to future generations.
“I assured him of our commitment to protecting these archives and addressing any gaps, so the next generation can access not just historical data, but the qualitative truths that define our national story,” she added.
Reflecting on the broader significance of his work, the Vice President emphasized the importance of national memory and historical ownership.
“His contributions highlight the need to own and preserve our history. As we reflect on Founders’ Day, we are reminded that Nkrumah’s declaration of independence was a bold, though unfinished, step towards African liberation. The lessons from that era are especially relevant in today’s shifting global landscape,” she said.
The Vice President concluded her message with a heartfelt tribute:
“I thank Rev. Chris Hesse for his extraordinary service to our nation and pray for his continued strength and good health.”
