A commercial bus traveling from Accra to Sefwi Asawinso caught fire on the morning of Thursday, September 18, 2025, leaving passengers shaken but fortunately unharmed.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:50 a.m. and involved a vehicle with registration number GE-8264-19. According to eyewitness accounts, smoke was first observed coming from the rear of the bus. Passengers quickly alerted the driver, but he reportedly continued driving for several minutes before finally stopping the vehicle.
The driver later attributed the cause of the fire to a torn fan belt but declined to provide further comments on record.
As the fire rapidly engulfed the bus, passengers managed to evacuate safely, avoiding injuries. However, many lost personal belongings in the blaze.
Speaking in a phone interview, the Western North Regional Fire Commander, Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Philip Kudzo Amagnoh, expressed serious concerns about the region's emergency response capacity. He revealed that the only functional fire tender dispatched to the scene broke down en route, resulting in a delayed response and no immediate firefighting support.
“This incident underscores the urgent need for improved logistical support. We cannot effectively safeguard lives and property with only one operational fire tender,” ACFO Amagnoh emphasized.
While the fire did not result in any casualties, it has reignited calls for better fire service infrastructure and emergency preparedness in the Western North Region.
