Ghana’s Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has provided an update on key aviation infrastructure developments as part of the Government Accountability Series. He revealed that the expansion of the Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport is now 90% complete and on track for completion by the end of the year.
“The runway, currently 1,981 meters, is being extended to 2,320 meters to accommodate medium-sized aircraft and support international operations,” said Minister Nikpe.
Enhancing Night Operations
As part of the government’s 24-hour economy agenda, the minister also announced improvements to night-time operations at major airports.
- Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport will now operate until 11:00 PM (previously 8:00 PM).
- Tamale International Airport has also extended its operations to 10:00 PM, from a previous closing time of 6:00 PM.
“These extensions will increase convenience for travelers and improve overall connectivity,” Mr. Nikpe emphasized.
Redevelopment Plans for Bolgatanga Airport
In a broader effort to modernize Ghana’s aviation infrastructure, Mr. Nikpe also confirmed plans to redevelop the Bolgatanga Airport to handle jet aircraft. This strategic project is expected to transform the airport into a major gateway for the Upper East Region.
“The redevelopment will play a critical role in promoting trade, tourism, and mining,” he stated. “We are currently conducting studies and site assessments to guide the next phases of implementation.”

The Transport Minister concluded by reinforcing the government’s commitment to boosting regional development through upgraded aviation infrastructure, which he described as essential to unlocking economic growth across the country.
