Botswana celebrated a historic achievement at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, after securing two medals in the Men’s 400 Metres Final, marking a significant milestone in the nation's sporting history.
Collen Kebinatshipi Claims Historic Gold
Busang Collen Kebinatshipi, just 21 years old, delivered a sensational performance to become the first Botswanan athlete to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships. He crossed the finish line in 43.53 seconds, setting a new national record and recording the fastest time in the world this year.
Following his victory, Kebinatshipi shared his excitement:
“This is my first title, and it feels crazy. I told myself to go out fast and do better than in the semifinal. The medal was just a bonus. Being able to run the national record and a world lead is fantastic. I still have the relay – I have to go back and recover for it. I think we are a strong contender for gold.”
Bayapo Ndori Secures Bronze
Adding to the nation's triumph, Bayapo Ndori earned the bronze medal with an impressive time of 44.20 seconds, completing a historic double podium finish for Botswana.
The silver medal was claimed by Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago, who finished in 43.72 seconds.
Botswana’s Sprinting Legacy Grows
This double-medal achievement follows Botswana's breakthrough at the 2024 Olympic Games, where Letsile Tebogo secured the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in the Men’s 200 Metres.
With Kebinatshipi and Ndori expected to team up with Tebogo in the upcoming 4×400 Metres Relay, Botswana is emerging as a serious contender for another podium finish.
This performance solidifies Botswana’s status as a rising force in global sprinting and represents a proud moment for the Southern African nation on the world athletics stage.
