As Kumasi prepares for the final funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the funeral committee has issued an official directive regarding the suspension of business activities on Thursday, September 18, 2025. However, several essential sectors have been exempted from this directive.
In a statement signed by the Acting Chief of Staff, Ambassador Nana Effah Apenteng, the committee clarified that banks, restaurants, transport operators, and pharmaceutical shops will be allowed to operate during the day despite the general suspension of business activities. This decision was made to ensure continued access to vital services on the day of the funeral.
The statement further emphasized that all other businesses in Kumasi must observe the closure in line with the cultural traditions and protocols associated with the Queen Mother’s burial rites. Schools and markets will also remain closed, and restrictions will be placed on movement throughout the day and night of September 18.
Additional exemptions have been granted to essential service providers, including:
- Electricity Company of Ghana
- Ghana Water Company Limited
- Ghana National Fire Service
- Ghana National Ambulance Service
- Ghana Health Service
These institutions will continue their operations without disruption.
Despite the daytime exemptions, the committee made it clear that all businesses—exempted or not—must close by 8:00 p.m. as a mark of respect for the Asante culture and to preserve the solemnity of the occasion.
The burial of Nana Konadu Yiadom III is expected to attract a significant number of mourners from across Ghana and beyond, highlighting the deep cultural importance of this traditional event. The city of Kumasi is expected to witness an array of ceremonial activities as the Ashanti Kingdom bids farewell to its revered Queen Mother.
