Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has leveled serious allegations against the former administration led by President Nana Akufo-Addo, claiming it was deeply complicit in illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as "galamsey."
In an interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face, Kwakye Ofosu criticized the previous government for its failure to address the escalating environmental damage caused by illegal mining.
“The previous government completely failed to address the issue. I have said it before, and I will repeat it — that administration was complicit in galamsey. Key figures within the party were involved,” he stated.
He cited a report authored by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, who was appointed by the same government to lead the fight against illegal mining. According to Kwakye Ofosu, the report exposed the direct involvement of top government and party officials in galamsey operations.
“Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, whom they themselves appointed to lead the charge against galamsey, produced a damning report that implicates both government and party officials,” he added.
Kwakye Ofosu went further to allege that illegal mining was a significant source of funding for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) during that period. This, he claimed, explained the administration’s lack of political will to confront the issue.
“He [Frimpong-Boateng] has gone on record stating that galamsey was a major financial resource for the NPP. So, it's no surprise they showed no real commitment to eradicating it,” Kwakye Ofosu emphasized.
The remarks come amid renewed national discussions on the adverse environmental impacts of illegal mining and growing calls for accountability and transparency in how successive governments have handled the issue.
