New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has downplayed recent endorsements of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by 15 Members of Parliament (MPs), asserting that the real strength of the party lies with its grassroots delegates—not the political elite.
Speaking to party supporters in Achiase on September 25, Acheampong emphasized that his campaign is rooted in the will of the delegates, not parliamentary endorsements.
“There are 20,000 strong delegates in this region who will vote. Fifteen MPs pale in comparison. It is the base of the party that counts, and that base is with me,” he declared to rapturous applause.
Achiase holds symbolic significance as the constituency of Kofi Marfo, a spokesperson for the MPs backing Bawumia. Acheampong’s visit there, therefore, sent a strong message of confidence and defiance, as he rallied local supporters who pledged their commitment to his candidacy.
He urged the NPP to prioritize inclusivity over elite endorsements, outlining his vision for a campaign built on renewal and empowerment of the grassroots.
“My campaign is about inclusiveness and renewal. It’s about ensuring no delegate is left behind,” he emphasized.
Acheampong further expressed confidence in his chances of winning the upcoming NPP presidential primaries scheduled for January 2026. During a recent interaction with supporters in the Eastern Region, he reiterated his belief that the majority of the region’s constituents are behind him.
“I believe the entire community is supporting this movement. The Eastern Region is with us,” he said.
“Let me be clear—I am going to win this election. I’m confident. I’m going to win.”
His remarks come in the wake of public endorsements of Dr. Bawumia by a group of 15 MPs from the Eastern Region, who declared their support for the Vice President as the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Acheampong’s statements highlight a growing divide within the NPP between institutional endorsements and grassroots momentum as the party heads toward its crucial internal elections.
