Ghana has achieved a significant diplomatic victory as the United States officially reverses its previously imposed visa restrictions. This move reinstates the issuance of five-year multiple-entry visas for Ghanaian citizens and restores full consular services.
According to Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the announcement was made during a bilateral discussion with US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
“I am really pleased that months of high-level diplomatic negotiations have led to a successful outcome,” Ablakwa said in a statement.
Background on the Restrictions
In July 2025, the US imposed strict visa rules on Ghana, limiting travelers to three-month single-entry visas. The decision was based on concerns over extended visa overstays, particularly involving students.
With the recent reversal, Minister Ablakwa emphasized a renewed strength in bilateral relations, calling the development:
“A healthier and stronger turn in Ghana-US relations... For God and Country.”
