Former President of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor, has emphasized the need for Africa to take control of its own narrative by establishing a pan-African media agency. Speaking at the "Broadcasting at the Crossroads" forum hosted by the Africa Media Bureau in Accra on Friday, September 26, 2025, Kufuor called on professionals in the media industry to come together and create a powerful African-centric media platform.
Kufuor stated, “If media professionals can establish a strong media agency here in Accra, dedicated to telling African stories—whether they are political, economic, social, or cultural—Africa will better define its own identity." He emphasized that such an agency could cover a wide range of topics, including trade, industry, and entertainment, ultimately shifting how the continent is perceived globally.
The former President also pointed out the challenges Africa faces in asserting its identity on the world stage, highlighting that the continent has often been defined from the outside. "Poor Africa has been defined from external perspectives. We are still struggling to find our true identity," Kufuor remarked.
Kufuor further reflected on the limitations of initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), describing them as largely symbolic due to a lack of robust implementation. He also questioned Africa's presence in global digital platforms, stating, “We talk about platforms, but how many of these platforms are truly controlled by us?”
The call for greater African representation in global media and platforms underscores the urgency for the continent to embrace its own stories, economic growth, and diverse cultures, helping to shape the global conversation.
