The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Arise News anchor, Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu, who was reportedly killed by armed robbers.
In a statement released on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the Minister described the incident as a "painful and heartbreaking tragedy." He extended his condolences to the management and staff of Arise News, as well as to the broader journalism community.
Wike emphasized that Somtochukwu’s untimely death represents a significant loss not only to Arise News but also to the Nigerian media industry and the nation at large.
“It is deeply saddening to lose such a promising and vibrant young journalist in such a cruel manner,” Wike said. “She was a bright soul whose death has left many in shock and mourning.”
Investigation and Medical Report
The Minister assured the public that the circumstances surrounding her death would be thoroughly investigated by security agencies. He added that a preliminary medical report would be provided to support the ongoing investigation.
According to Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, the Mandate Secretary for Health at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Somtochukwu was brought to Maitama General Hospital already deceased at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Monday. This clarification follows unverified reports suggesting that she may have been denied medical attention upon arrival.
Commitment to Justice
Wike pledged that the perpetrators of this crime would be brought to justice, emphasizing that no effort would be spared in ensuring accountability. He urged the police and relevant authorities to act swiftly and decisively.
“The police will get to the root of this. Justice must be served for Somtochukwu and her grieving family,” he stated.

The Minister concluded his statement with a heartfelt prayer for the deceased and her loved ones, including her colleagues at Arise News and her family.
“We continue to pray for strength for the Chairman of Arise News, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, her friends, colleagues, and family. May God in His infinite mercy grant Somtochukwu eternal rest and give those left behind the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
