During a recent protest organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to denounce what it claims is state-sponsored intimidation, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye delivered a strong critique of the current government's actions, describing them as undemocratic and oppressive.
The former Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku expressed deep concern over the arrest of political opponents based on comments made on social media or television, calling such actions hallmarks of authoritarian regimes rather than democratic governance.
“There is no democracy in the world where someone is placed in an armoured vehicle simply for expressing themselves on social media or television. That only happens under dictatorships,” Dr. Okoe Boye asserted.
He specifically referenced the arrest of Chairman Azoka, suggesting it represents a troubling pattern of using law enforcement as a tool to stifle dissent. According to Okoe Boye, this climate of fear has even inhibited basic police interactions.
“The police are afraid to even take pictures because of the environment of fear that’s been created,” he said.
While acknowledging that former President John Dramani Mahama has cultivated a respectable image internationally, Okoe Boye challenged him to ensure that same integrity is reflected in his domestic leadership, particularly among his appointees and security agencies.
“We want that dignity and virtue to be visible in the conduct of his appointees, the police, and the entire government. You cannot preach virtue abroad and practice vice at home,” he added.
Dr. Okoe Boye emphasized that Ghana’s democratic reputation is at risk if the current trajectory of arrests and intimidation continues unchecked.
