Woman Cries Out After Arab Employer Seizes Passport, Blocks Return Home

A Nigerian woman has taken to TikTok to share a heartbreaking account of her ordeal in an undisclosed Arab country, where her employer allegedly confiscated her passport and is refusing to let her return home.

In the emotional video, the young woman—who said she travelled abroad for domestic work, describing herself as a "shangala"—revealed that her boss has withheld her passport and denied her request to leave, even after she offered to pay for her own flight back to Nigeria.

Fighting back tears, she explained that her employer insists she must complete a two-year contract before releasing the travel document, effectively leaving her trapped.

"I promised myself I wouldn’t cry, but I’m tired and weak," she said, visibly distressed.

She described the country as unsafe and difficult to escape from, adding that the work is far more exhausting and dangerous than she was led to believe. The woman warned others against seeking quick financial gains by taking similar jobs abroad, urging Nigerians to think twice before making such life-altering decisions.

“Don’t lose your soul for money,” she pleaded.

Broader Implications

Her story echoes long-standing concerns about the exploitation of migrant workers in certain Middle Eastern countries, where cases of passport seizure, contract manipulation, and forced labour have been widely reported.

Social Media Reactions

The video has since gone viral, drawing strong reactions from the public:

  • GuyMr: "Modern slavery."
  • Jaiyejeje: "This still happens in 2025? A family member had the same issue in 2014 in Libya. They took her passport and treated her like a slave. Only God knows how she escaped."
  • Tobo_Jay: "Her face looks like someone pregnant for her boss. Maybe that’s why he won’t let her go."
