Ghanaian investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has added his voice to discussions surrounding the newly launched Big Push infrastructure initiative, spearheaded by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). In a social media commentary, Manasseh emphasized that while the programme holds transformative potential, its success hinges on the absence of corruption.
In a Facebook post observed by MyNewsGh, Manasseh wrote:
“If BIG PUSH is implemented without corruption, it will birth an elephant-sized impact that could cause problems in some quarters.”
His remarks have been widely interpreted as a veiled critique of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), suggesting that systemic corruption under the current administration could undermine such initiatives.
Mahama Sets the Record Straight
During the official launch of the Big Push programme on Tuesday, September 16, at Afienya in Accra, former President John Dramani Mahama clarified the scope of the initiative. He stressed that only contractors with the proven capacity to execute large-scale infrastructure projects will be considered.
Mahama addressed concerns about lobbying and favoritism in contractor selection, humorously recalling a recent interaction:
“Some wheelbarrow contractors came to me saying, ‘Oh, I hear they’re distributing projects under the Big Push. I want one.’ I told them, ‘My friend, this is not for wheelbarrow contractors. Even though you’re my friend, I won’t give it to you because it is not meant for wheelbarrow contractors.’”
About the Big Push
The Big Push is a strategic infrastructure development agenda proposed by the NDC to accelerate national growth through major public investments. The programme aims to fund critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, hospitals, schools, and water systems, intended to drive job creation and long-term socio-economic transformation.
If executed with transparency and efficiency, the Big Push could significantly shape Ghana’s development trajectory and become a cornerstone of future national progress.
