The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has urged political and community leaders across the South-West to put aside partisan interests and unite in the fight against insecurity. He emphasized that the region fully supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to address the country’s growing security challenges.

Warning Against Politicising National Security

Speaking in a televised interview, the monarch cautioned that treating security issues as political tools has weakened national unity.

God has brought our leader, President Bola Tinubu, to lead us. Traditional leaders are not talking about politics; we are talking about how to save our people and our race. That is way beyond politics,” he said.

Collaboration Between Traditional Rulers and Politicians

Oba Ogunwusi highlighted the important role traditional institutions play in maintaining security at the grassroots level. He stressed that royal fathers, being closest to local communities, are often first to detect emerging threats.

He called for stronger cooperation between traditional rulers and elected officials to enhance local defence systems.

Strengthening Regional Defences

The Ooni confirmed that intelligence reports indicate that hostile groups and criminal elements are gradually moving toward the South-West region.

According to him, local security structures are being reinforced using methods rooted in the region’s long-standing defence traditions. Hunters and forest guards are now playing a critical role in monitoring and protecting vulnerable communities.

Yes, we have discovered that, and that’s the truth. That is why we’re coming together. We are enforcing and strengthening our local guards; we are very strong. As traditional institutions, we’re very strong when it comes to that. We are facing this head-on. We have intelligence information. They are coming closer to us, and we’re going to send them back,” he stated.

The monarch affirmed that the centuries-old resilience of the South-West will not be compromised.
