The Gbetsile Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs. Eleanor Kakra Banes Botchway, has convicted two police officers involved in drug trafficking and sentenced them to a combined 30 years in prison.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nasiru Amadu, and Police Corporal Emmanuel Mintah (No. 51836 G/CPL), were found guilty of unlawful possession of narcotic drugs for trafficking. The pair had been charged in 2023 under sections 23(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960, and section 37(2)(b) of the Narcotic Control Commission Act, 2020 (1019).
On Friday, November 28, 2025, the court handed down sentences of 5 years for Amadu and 10 years for Mintah, with the sentences to run concurrently. Additionally, each of the convicts was fined 10,000 penalty units (GHC 120,000). If they fail to pay the fines, they will serve an extra three years on top of their existing sentences.
### **Background to the Case**
The case stems from an investigation led by the Afienya District police. Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ernest Kuofie revealed that the two accused officers were caught trafficking narcotics on November 19, 2023. At the time of their arrest, Amadu, aged 48, was the second-in-command at the Sakumono District Police Headquarters, and Mintah, aged 43, was working as a service driver under him.
On the day of the incident, the police received intelligence about a vehicle, a Nissan Navara with registration number GP 727, which was suspected to be transporting narcotics from Ho to Accra. A snap check was set up, and at around 7:15 PM that evening, the vehicle was intercepted. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed eight sacks containing 541 compressed parcels of a substance believed to be narcotics.
### **Details of the Crime**
The investigation revealed that Mintah had a family connection, a relative named Oluman, who resided in Ashaiman Tulaku and was involved in the illegal narcotics trade. According to the prosecution, Oluman contacted Mintah on November 19, asking for his assistance in transporting Indian hemp from Peki Tsibu in the Volta Region to Tulaku in exchange for a fee. Mintah then enlisted Amadu’s help in the illicit operation.
The two officers drove vehicle GP 727 from Sakumono to a forest area near Peki Tsibu, where they received the narcotic drugs from a waiting Benz bus. As they were transporting the drugs, police intercepted them after receiving intelligence, leading to their arrest.
The prosecution further revealed that this incident was not the first time the accused officers had been involved in such illegal activities. The pair had previously engaged in drug trafficking, marking November 19, 2023, as the second occasion they were caught in the act.
