Movement along the busy Ore road was brought to an abrupt stop after police officers reportedly ordered travellers to remain in place following intelligence that bandits were operating further ahead. The sudden halt caused a major gridlock, leaving many commuters anxious and frustrated.
“Even the Policemen Fear Bandits”
In a viral video recorded at the scene, a distressed traveller described the tense situation, expressing shock that even the police escorting the convoy refused to proceed.
“This country that we are, even the policemen fear bandits,” he lamented. “Now we are on Ore road. They said bandits are on the road so we cannot pass. See the hold-up. See how we are all parked on Ore road — even the policemen with us.”
According to the traveller, officers advised drivers to stay put until they received updates on the alleged movement of the suspected armed group.
Travellers Stranded Amid Tension
The disruption left hundreds stranded under the sun, with many stepping out of their vehicles to assess the situation. Video footage showed long lines of stationary vehicles as travellers waited for clearance to proceed.
The incident adds to growing concerns about insecurity along the Lagos–Benin–Ore expressway, a route that has witnessed increasing cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, and violent attacks on motorists in recent years.

Nigerians took to social media to express fear and frustration over recurring insecurity on major highways.
One user, @Emmalex_8, urged travellers to avoid non-essential trips:
“Please, if it’s not a must or very important, travelling by road this period is not advisable oooooo,” the user wrote, highlighting the spike in security alerts.
Highway insecurity, especially across the South-West and North-Central regions, has become a persistent concern, with numerous reported cases of abduction for ransom. Many road users say the rising threat of ambush has made travel increasingly unpredictable, particularly during festive periods when traffic is heaviest.
