Dr. Ben Ochere-Ankrah, a governance analyst and lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, has urged Ghanaians to safeguard the country’s long-standing tradition of religious tolerance amid the controversy surrounding Muslim students at Wesley Girls’ Senior High School.
Speaking on *Peace 104.3 FM* on November 27, 2025, Dr. Ochere-Ankrah emphasized the importance of preserving Ghana’s unique ability to foster interfaith harmony. He pointed out that the nation has a rich history of religious coexistence, noting, “I have traveled and read extensively; it is only in Ghana that the Chief Imam can celebrate his birthday in a Catholic Church and engage in a conversation with a pastor. We associate with one another like siblings, often setting aside religious differences. We are a unique country, and such issues should not even be up for debate.”
Dr. Ochere-Ankrah also addressed the concerns raised by some parents regarding school restrictions on Muslim students fasting during Ramadan. He explained that when headmistresses prevent students from fasting due to health concerns, it may lead to conflict with parents who object to such restrictions.
To prevent misunderstandings, he suggested that schools should consult with the students’ parents or guardians, and, where necessary, obtain their written consent to ensure the headmistress is protected in case of any health-related incidents.
He further emphasized the need for mutual respect between Islamic and Christian institutions, stating, “Both Islamic schools and Christian schools have their own rules, and we should respect that. This has been the practice for years without any significant problems—so why are we suddenly facing these issues?”
Dr. Ochere-Ankrah concluded by advocating for continued peace and unity among Ghanaians, urging the nation to uphold its reputation as a model of religious tolerance and coexistence.
