Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has vowed to resign from office if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fails to secure victory in Edo State during the 2027 presidential election.
The governor made this declaration during an interview with veteran journalist Babajide Otitoju, asserting that the political climate in Edo State has shifted overwhelmingly in Tinubu’s favour.
According to Okpebholo, “Asiwaju is even more popular than I am here. Edo people already know that the work I’m doing is influenced by Asiwaju’s impact. You will see the kind of results that will emerge because there is no opposition here in Edo.”
He emphasized that support for Tinubu is widespread across the state, saying, “Everybody is for Asiwaju here.”
Dismisses Obaseki’s Influence
When Otitoju suggested that supporters of former Governor Godwin Obaseki might pose a challenge to the APC in 2027, Okpebholo dismissed the possibility outright.
“Who? Obaseki?” he asked rhetorically.
The governor insisted that Obaseki no longer has political influence in the state, adding that the former governor’s performance in office has diminished his standing among Edo citizens.
“You cannot scam Edo people and come back here,” he said. “His poor record will not allow him to return. When children on the street can pray for me, no child or mother will pray for Obaseki.”
Labour Party ‘Irrelevant’ in Edo, Says Governor
Asked about the Labour Party’s strong showing in previous elections, Governor Okpebholo dismissed the party, claiming it no longer has any significant presence in Edo politics.
“When? Labour Party? In the recent by-elections in Edo Central and Ovia, did you see them? We have never produced the kind of results we produced in Esan,” he said.
He credited President Tinubu for infrastructural developments that he believes have endeared the president to Edo residents, including key projects such as the flyovers and the Sapele Road rehabilitation.
“These are the things that will speak for Asiwaju. And he will win here — perfectly,” he added.
Reiterates His Bold Promise
Despite Otitoju’s warning that he should be cautious about making such a commitment, Okpebholo repeated his vow:
“If Asiwaju does not win here, I will resign as governor. I am telling you. There is no election here for him. Forget it.”
On His Political Style
Governor Okpebholo described himself as a political disciple of the late Chief Tony Anenih.
“I understood Chief Anenih. My style is not thuggery; it is grassroots. You will not see me with elites — you will see me with ordinary people on the streets,” he said.
