The Minority in Parliament has called on Speaker Alban Bagbin and Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga to issue an unequivocal apology for what it describes as a politically motivated attempt to undermine Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei criticized the recent move to replace Afenyo-Markin, stating that it disregarded established parliamentary procedures and excluded the Minority caucus from the decision-making process.
“I wrote multiple letters to the Speaker to express my strong displeasure at this unilateral action,” she said, noting that the move contravenes both national parliamentary rules and ECOWAS protocols.
Appiagyei emphasized that Afenyo-Markin’s mandate as the 3rd Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament remains valid, disputing the justification presented for the leadership change. She urged the Speaker to withdraw the referral against him and issue an apology to Afenyo-Markin, the Minority caucus, the nation, and ECOWAS.
“They claim to defend the Constitution, yet now seek to punish the one man who had the courage to stand firm in defence of the rule of law,” she stated.
The Deputy Minority Leader further alleged that the move forms part of a broader campaign to intimidate Afenyo-Markin. She referenced comments by an NDC National Vice Chairman, selective media leaks purportedly from the Attorney-General’s office, and the Speaker’s handling of the ECOWAS Parliament issue as evidence of politically driven actions.
According to the Minority, such developments threaten public confidence in Ghana’s parliamentary democracy and require immediate corrective action.
