Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, has urged Ghanaians to respect the historical purpose and identity of mission schools in light of the ongoing debate surrounding religious practices at Wesley Girls’ High School.
Speaking on *Newsfile*, Mr. Fuseini addressed what he termed as misconceptions regarding the involvement of mission schools in the educational landscape. He emphasized that the disparities in educational investments across religious groups were not born of choice, but rather the result of colonial-era decisions that determined which forms of education were recognized by the state.
“Islamic education arrived in the Gold Coast long before Western education. Muslims did not delay in educating their children; they focused on the Qur’an and Hadith, which were not required in the secular state,” he explained.
Reflecting on his personal experiences, Mr. Fuseini highlighted the peaceful coexistence between different faiths. “I come from a family with both Muslims and Christians, and I attended a Catholic school where I was a member of the Catholic Youth Organisation. Singing Christian hymns and reciting the Lord’s Prayer did not convert me to Christianity,” he shared.
Mr. Fuseini stressed that mission schools were originally established for evangelism and faith-based education, and that it is important to preserve their character and identity. However, he acknowledged that some institutions have evolved to accommodate Muslim students, including the establishment of mosques on their campuses.
He also criticized the decision by Shafic Osman to take legal action against Wesley Girls’ High School. “There was no need to sue the school. This issue could have been resolved through dialogue with key stakeholders to find ways to accommodate the religious practices of Muslim students,” he argued.
Mr. Fuseini cautioned that religious issues are highly sensitive and often stir strong emotions. He called for careful and respectful handling of such matters, with an emphasis on preserving the integrity of institutions while ensuring that students’ freedom of worship is respected.
