The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take immediate action to address the rising unemployment in Ghana, describing the issue as a significant threat to national stability.
Speaking at the 59th Congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Saturday, November 29, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II also reiterated his appeal to the German government to invest in and support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana.
“We are all aware of the unemployment crisis in this country. It was on this basis that I raised the matter when the German President and Ambassador visited me last month,” he said.
“I would like to once again urge the German government to support small and medium-scale industries in Ghana. Unemployment is a major concern for us all, and it is something the President must give urgent attention to,” the Asantehene emphasized.
Additionally, the Asantehene drew attention to staffing shortages at KNUST, urging the government to provide the necessary funds for the recruitment of more academic and administrative staff.
“Currently, KNUST faces the challenge of insufficient staffing. The recent five-year cyclical review of our university by the Ghana Education Commission highlighted the unfavorable student-to-lecturer ratio, which is placing a strain on our hardworking lecturers and threatening the quality of education,” he stated.
“I therefore appeal to the government to provide the necessary financial clearance to enable the recruitment of additional staff to address this challenge,” he concluded.
