Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly criticized the judiciary, accusing it of acting in favor of political interests following the Tamale High Court's decision to annul the 2024 parliamentary election results for the Kpandai Constituency.**

On Monday, the court ruled in favor of a petition filed by NDC candidate Daniel Nsala Wakpal, who alleged that the 2024 election was fraught with irregularities. The court subsequently ordered a rerun of the election within 30 days, a ruling that has sparked fierce opposition from the Minority.

Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Wednesday, November 26, Afenyo-Markin described the court’s action as “shameful” and claimed the judges were acting on behalf of their political “paymasters.”

“The judiciary must understand that their actions, when driven by political interests, can destroy our peaceful republic,” Afenyo-Markin said. “We are not afraid to speak out. They can call us one by one for contempt of court, but we will not remain silent. The world will see their disgraceful conduct.”

The Minority Leader further criticized the manner in which the ruling was issued, describing it as legally troubling and unprecedented.

“How can a judge who claims to be impartial behave in such a manner and expect the public to stay quiet?” Afenyo-Markin questioned. “This ruling, with far-reaching political, legal, and democratic consequences, was handed down without a full written judgment. There were no written reasons, no factual findings, and no legal analysis—just a vague directive issued into the public domain. Now the entire constituency is being told there must be a rerun.”

While acknowledging that courts sometimes deliver rulings with reasons to follow, Afenyo-Markin emphasized that such an approach is not acceptable when the stakes are this high.

“As a practicing lawyer with years of experience, I understand that courts occasionally issue rulings with reasons to follow. However, this is the exception, not the norm. In a case of this magnitude, such a practice is entirely unacceptable,” he stated.

Additionally, Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about transparency, alleging that the NDC had prior knowledge of the court’s decision before it was officially announced, further undermining confidence in the judicial process.
