A Lagos police officer has come under intense public criticism after a viral video captured him assaulting a commercial bus conductor, sparking widespread outrage among passengers and online viewers.

The video, recorded by a female passenger, shows the officer forcefully pinning the visibly exhausted conductor against a bus while onlookers pleaded for restraint. Several distressed voices can be heard shouting, “Leave him! Do you want to kill him? He cannot run away!”

One woman warned that the conductor appeared to be suffocating and urged bystanders to get water to prevent him from collapsing. Another passenger cautioned the officer, saying, “If this guy slumps in your hands, it won’t be funny. An elderly man is begging you—if he dies, can you take him home?”

Struggling to breathe, the conductor repeatedly cried out, “Help me, I don’t know what I did.”

Officer Claims He Was Assaulted First

Reacting to the accusations, the police officer insisted his actions were justified. According to him, the confrontation began after a LASTMA official stopped the bus for a traffic violation.

He claimed he had stepped in to plead with the LASTMA officer and instructed the conductor to properly shut the door while carrying passengers. Moments later, he alleged, the conductor began to “beat” him on his uniform — an action even the driver reportedly cautioned against.

The officer also accused the woman filming the incident of “supporting” the conductor, though he later admitted she had every right to record the encounter.
“She has every right as a Nigerian to make her video,” he said. “If I were doing something bad, I would seize the phone. But I’m not doing anything wrong.”

Public Anger Over Police Brutality

The incident has revived conversations about police misconduct and excessive force in Lagos. Residents continue to demand stricter oversight and reform within the state’s police force, citing recurring reports of harassment and abuse of power.

A video of the incident circulating on social media shows passengers condemning the officer’s behavior and calling for accountability.
