The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, has revealed that the number of active National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cardholders has reached 20 million nationwide.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s “The Point of View” with Bernard Avle on Wednesday, November 26, Dr. Bampoe noted that the current figure represents a significant increase compared to the same period in 2024, when active membership was 1.5 million lower. He projected that the number of active users could rise to 21 million by the end of 2025.
“Last year around this time, we had 1.5 million fewer Ghanaians actively registered. Now we are at 20 million, and I believe we will reach 21 million by the close of 2025,” he stated.
Dr. Bampoe underscored the importance of maintaining an active NHIS card, emphasizing that it ensures timely access to healthcare services.
“Twenty million Ghanaians currently possess valid cards. This means that if they fall ill, they can use the card to receive care. Card ownership is essential, and many Ghanaians have taken the initiative this year to renew their membership,” he explained.
He clarified that actual usage varies, as some individuals may visit health facilities multiple times within a year.
“Some people use their cards twice, others three times. So although we may have 20 million active cardholders, the number of people who have accessed care could be around 17 million or 15 million. We must also account for repeat usage, where one person may use the card multiple times,” he said.
Dr. Bampoe encouraged all citizens to keep their NHIS cards active and readily available to ensure smooth access to healthcare services.
